Bioresearch & Veterinary Services (BVS)

BVS is responsible for the care and welfare of animals used in biomedical research at the University. This includes the day-to-day management of animal facilities, provision of veterinary care, staff training and compliance with Home Office legislation.

The DDI initiative has been created by the University of Edinburgh to support the creation of new partnerships that will make a positive difference in society. So the University is especially proud to be delivering the initiative as part of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal, which aims to deliver inclusive growth for all our citizens.

The Health & Safety Department provides appropriate and effective support to facilitate the University's attainment of its core objectives in teaching and research, whilst preserving the highest quality of health and safety practice across the University's wide spectrum of activities, so meeting all its legal and moral obligations in this regard.

Human Resources (HR)

HR supports the University’s delivery of Strategy 2030 through the deployment of support, improvements and initiatives aimed at maintaining and developing an even better place to work. We do this through the delivery of the People Strategy, aligned to our values, which will further enhance the University’s reputation, internally and externally, as a world-class employer and a really great place to work.

The Operations team provide operational leadership across the directorate and strategic leadership to key cross-University initiatives such as the Edinburgh BioQuarter. Operations also sit across the Risk & Resilience team, who works with at all levels in The University to help develop simple, effective, coordinated risk management, business continuity and emergency management processes that assist planning, operations and decision-making.

Accommodation, Catering & Events

Accommodation, Catering and Events provide catered and self-catered residential accommodation for over 9,000 students, including community and welfare support through its Residence Life service. We also operate 17 cafes and a range of other catering products to students and staff across the University estate. Under our commercial brand, The University of Edinburgh Hospitality and Events Collection, we deliver hotel accommodation options to around 200,000 guests each year plus an extensive selection of conference, catering and event services to over 2,000 events.

The Estates department is the largest department at the University of Edinburgh, with over 950 staff members working across five campuses, in over 550 buildings within 20 separate functions. Many colleagues work a full range of shifts meaning the department is operational 24/7, looking after the second largest University estate in the UK.

Edinburgh is among the world’s top institutions for tackling the world’s most pressing environmental and social issues. SRS works to enable the University to understand, explain and deliver on its ambition to be a leading socially responsible and sustainable university. Its key areas of focus are the University's carbon emissions, supply chains, resource use, responsible investments and community engagement.

Sport & Exercise

Sport & Exercise is among the most respected multi-sport fitness providers in the country, with over 21,000 gym members, 65 sports clubs and ranking 3rd in the UK for sport. Our graduates include the likes of Olympic champions Sir Chris Hoy, Dame Katherine Grainger and Eric Liddell. We are Open to Everybody, with delivery sites at the Pleasance Sports Complex & Gym (indoor sport & fitness), Peffermill Playing Fields (outdoor team sports), St Leonards Land (sports halls and swimming pool), Easter Bush (satellite gym) and Firbush Outdoor Centre (outdoor adventure).
